Kerry's Tips & Tricks

Here are some interesting facts about Koi breeding and genetics:3 d

  • Male Koi are usually sexually mature at two years old; females at three.:
  • When females become sexuallymature, their abdomens become visibly distended with ova, making them appear stocker than the slimmer, tapered-bodied males.
  • A female may lay 50,000 to 2100,000 beige eggs per pound of body weight.
  • The male follows her around closely, spraying the eggs with milt.
  • The male helps the female with spawning. As she swims around, he pushes against her side with his body, expressing the eggs.
  • The eggs will hatch in 7 days at 63F, 5 days at 70F, 4 days at 75F and 3 days at 80F.

I'm sending out this info because the fish are really active spawning right now!
